Age of Uprising: The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas

Age of Uprising: The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas Official UK Trailer (2014) - Mads Mikkelsen Movie HD

Not the greatest movie in the world. Very slow moving and it was very dark on the screen. In many scenes half of the screen was pitch black. Still, we stuck it out till the end. The story was pretty good and the scenes that weren't pitch black were impressive.

One thing that was a little odd is that the movie is in French (with English subtitles, natch) even though it is set in Germany. Doesn't matter, there isn't a whole lot of dialog. There is some violence, but it is done in almost complete silence, none of the heart pounding music you get with modern action movies. It's a little hard to follow the action, there aren't a lot of clues, and sometimes you have to reorder things in your mind as new information appears.

The movie is based on a book published in 1810 that chronicles a dispute between a merchant and royalty in 16th century Saxony (Saxony is now part of Germany). The story is mostly famous because of its modern literary style.

Martin Luther makes an appearance, though in the movie credits they refer to him simply as The Theologist.

Wikipedia has an article about the movie.

We watched it on Netflix.
