Ukraine War

The 80th Air Assault Brigade captured a T-90M Proryv tank in the Kursk region

The Geopolitics has a summary:

Four years after Russian troops crossed into Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the war has settled into something more troubling – a grinding conflict that continues to destroy lives and livelihood, and test the limits of international law. The early drama of invasion has given way to sufferings and anxieties, and there is hardly any substantive move toward peace.

The front line stretches for roughly 1,200 kilometres. Russia today controls about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, but its gains since 2022 have been slow and costly. Estimates suggest that up to 1.8 million soldiers on both sides have been killed, wounded or gone missing. Civilian losses remain severe. The UN has documented nearly 15,000 civilian deaths and more than 40,000 injuries, while warning the true number is higher.

Thanks, Obama.

Just popped in my head this morning. Used Google song search to track it down. I could remember it perfectly in my head but I could not sing it for shit. Google was still able to sort it out. Weird.

Tara Polar Station

Tara Polar Station

Tara Polar Station is a French drifting scientific base aimed for Arctic Ocean expeditions and operated by the Tara Oceans Foundation and its collaborators. - Wikipedia

All the stories about this thing talk about Global Warming. Can't say as I blame them, that's how you get idiots to cough up the dough to fund this project.

Putting the global warming nonsense aside, it's a heck of a project. Imagine being stuck on this boat for 6 to 9 months with a dozen other people. It's almost as bad as being in a nuclear submarine. You can go outside, but in the middle of winter it is going to be completely black outside. It will be interesting to see how well they survive.

National Ignition Facility

National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California

Wikipedia:

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is a laser-based inertial confinement fusion (ICF) research facility, located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, United States. NIF's mission is to achieve fusion ignition with high energy gain. It achieved the first instance of scientific breakeven controlled fusion in an experiment on December 5, 2022, with an energy gain factor of 1.5. It supports nuclear weapon maintenance and design by studying the behavior of matter under the conditions found within nuclear explosions.

Bali Sea Ferry Rail by Ferrosur

MV Bali Sea

Naval Nostalgia:

The MV Bali Sea was a rare rail ferry that operated between Coatzacoalcos, Mexico and Mobile, Alabama, carrying up to 115 fully loaded railcars across the Gulf of Mexico. Instead of crossing land borders, trains from Mexico’s Ferrosur line were rolled directly onto the ship using a linkspan ramp system supported by two vertical towers. These towers allowed for precise height adjustments to match the ferry deck with the shore tracks, ensuring smooth loading regardless of sea level changes.

Originally launched in 1981 as a heavy-lift ship, she was converted into a rail ferry in 2000 to serve the CG Railway route. The Bali Sea offered a 900-mile maritime shortcut for rail cargo, cutting transit time and avoiding congestion at U.S.–Mexico border crossings. After two decades of service, she was retired in 2021 and replaced by larger, faster ferries, but her role in connecting two nations with seamless train-to-sea transport remains a landmark in intermodal logistics.

Virgo Detector

Virgo Gravitational Wave Detector

The Virgo interferometer is a large-scale scientific instrument near Pisa, Italy, for detecting gravitational waves. The detector is a Michelson interferometer, which can detect the minuscule length variations in its two 3 km (1.9 mi) arms induced by the passage of gravitational waves. The required precision is achieved using many systems to isolate it from the outside world, including keeping its mirrors and instrumentation in an ultra-high vacuum and suspending them using complex systems of pendula.

Between its periodic observations, the detector is upgraded to increase its sensitivity. The observation runs are performed in collaboration with other similar detectors, including the two Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatories (LIGO) in the United States and the Japanese Kamioka Gravitational Wave Detector (KAGRA), because cooperation between several detectors is crucial for detecting gravitational waves and pinpointing their origin.

Virgo was conceived and built when gravitational waves were only a prediction of general relativity. The project, named after the Virgo galaxy cluster, was approved in 1992 and construction was completed in 2003. After several years without detection, Virgo was shut down in 2011 for the "Advanced Virgo" upgrades. In 2015, the first observation of gravitational waves was made by the two LIGO detectors, while Virgo was still being upgraded. Virgo resumed observations in early August 2017, making its first detection on 14 August (together with the LIGO detectors); this was quickly followed by the detection of the GW170817 gravitational wave, the only one also observed with classical methods (optical, gamma-ray, X-ray and radio telescopes) as of 2024.

Chasing Threads

"Sir, Your Parking Brake Exploded" - Fixing a Ford
Watch Wes Work

Jack has been working on making his lathe cut 30 threads per inch. He brought a bunch of pieces to lunch yesterday for show and tell, but he put them away before I managed to take any photos. Probably have to go pay him a visit. He had to make a couple of gears, and to do that he needed a cutter to cut the gear teeth. He tried making his own cutter, but that didn't work out so well. He ended up buying a set of expensive cutters.
