We have been going to the movie theater more often than usual lately. Thursday night I took the whole family to see "Becket" with Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole. It was a new print of the 1963 film. Before we went to see it I was trying to explain it to my daughter and I got it confused with "A Man For All Seasons", but I think the confusion was justified. Both movies are about a man named Thomas who goes against an English King named Henry. Becket happened about 1166 with Henry the second, one hundred years after William the Conqueror (a Norman) beat the Saxons at the battle of Hastings. "A Man For All Seasons" was about Thomas More and Henry the eighth about 300 years later. It was made in 1966. Now movie doubles come out within weeks of each other instead of years.
Saturday night my wife and I went to see "The Lookout", a well made film with a depressing story line. I don't know which is worse, comedy that is too stupid to be funny ("Borat"), or stupidity that results in disaster.
We rented "Angela" from the video store sometime last week. A well done Italian film about a woman married to a local Mafia type. Not much of a story, it was more of an emotional experience. Sad, but not horrible.
