Gunsmith of Williamsburg

Colonial Gunsmith

From my original post:
I've watched the first 8 episodes. They are short, about 5 minutes each. There is a whole lot of heating metal to red hot in the forge and then hammering on it. A whole lot. It takes two guys working full time for two weeks to make a barrel. There is also a great deal of filing. Seems files are old technology, like 2,500 years old. In spite of all the work that goes into making these guns, the colonists were still dependent on Europe for the raw materials. There are ten episodes. The last nine can be found here. I think the engraving was done for entertainment. After a couple of months of hard hard labor heating and hammer and filing, a little bit of fine work with a light hammer and chisel was probably very relaxing.
