Pluto
Pluto
[Tomorrow], and after a long journey of nine years, the New Horizons spacecraft will make its highly anticipated flight past Pluto and its five moons. - Carolyn Porco, NASA. You'd think they could have come up with a better name for the probe, something like 'Space Hound of the Baskervilles', or 'The Tail Wagging Fiend'. 'New Horizons' sounds like something that came out of a committee, and I suppose it did. I dunno, maybe that's what it takes to make things happen.
Since Mickey Mouse was always the one seen with Pluto (dog type, and trust me, it was all I could do not to type doggy style but I'm okay now. Relax.)perhaps they could have just called it Mickey. Or Searching Mouse, if they were going for a Native American vibe.
An anti-dog name like Mickey would be more logical, but Mickey is, how shall I put it? Too peaceful? He doesn't have conquer-and-exploit vibe so dear to action-movie lovers.
