I don't like the
Mercator Projection. I much prefer my
Pergielian projection, but I haven't written a program to display it. Meanwhile,
Richard Morey has a web page where you can play with the Mercator Projection. The images here on this blog are just screen shots I took of Richard's page.

All lines of constant bearing (rhumbs or loxodromes—those making constant angles with the meridians) are represented by straight segments on a Mercator map. The two properties, conformality and straight rhumb lines, make Mercator's projection uniquely suited to marine navigation.
ReplyDeleteIf you want other properties for your maps, there are other projectsion which are more suitable. Mercator is for sailing the seas.
