Map of the Day

Lower 48 Elevation by Scott Reinhard
Interesting color choices, but it certainly points out the flat nature of the Midwest.

  1. What sea level rise (e.g. because of ice cap melting) would be needed for there to be
only a sea between the Rockies and the Appelations?

  2. Quite a bit. Chicago, which is at the southern end of Lake Michigan, has an elevation of 600 feet. It's downstream and downhill from the there to New Oreleans, though there is a bar that prevents the Great Lakes from draining into the Mississippi. The Great Lakes drain eastward through the St. Lawrence Seaway. There is a man made canal that connects Chicago to the Mississippi river.
