Chevrolet Corvair

I enjoy watching Matt's videos. No politics, not much talking, just getting things done. Most of his videos are about getting vehicles that have gotten stuck in the sand unstuck. He has a Jeep Cherokee that he uses for this, but now he is building a new tow vehicle for his towing business starting with the body of an old Corvair station wagon. He seems to have some affection for the Corvair, the hood louvers on his current tow vehicle were taken from a Corvair. The body on this vehicle is from a Corvair, but being as the chassis and the underpinnings are all custom, saying that this vehicle is based on a Corvair is like saying Grave Digger is a panel truck.

The Chevrolet Corvair was a nice little economy car built by General Motors from 1960 to 1969. Ralph Nader made it infamous with his book Unsafe at any Speed. The Corvair wasn't any more unsafe than any other car at the time, but Ralph had some valid points about the safety of cars in general and the publication of his book marked the beginning of the trend toward safer cars.

Unlike all other American vehicles, the Corvair had a rear mounted, air cooled engine. As far as I know, only Porsche and Volkswagen used the same kind of arrangement. The engine is popular with kitplane builders, but look out for bogus Chinese crankshafts.

I like the way the second generation Corvairs look. To my mind, the first generation is hideous.

The farther south this expedition gets, the rougher the roads and the more treacherous the river crossings. Pretty amazing.
