The kids had a guest here this weekend. She is a Chemical Engineer from Venezuela currently working at what used-to-be a Shell refinery in Buenos Aires. She showed us some pictures from her work and pointed out that they all wear four-gas-detectors on the job. The four gases that the device measures are:
- Carbon Monoxide, because it can kill you.
- Hydrocarbons, because too high a concentration can be explosive.
- Oxygen, because too low a level can be dangerous
- Hydrogen Sulfide, which is deadly. Fortunately it smells bad at low concentration. Unfortunately, your nose quickly forgets.
