This video about Pavlov's House shows up on YouTube Shorts, and now I'm wondering where this house is.
Volgograd |
Wikipedia knows and the coordinates take me to the middle of Russia. Wait, what? Wasn't Stalingrad St. Petersburg? No, dumkoffski, the Soviets renamed St. Petersburg Leningrad. Stalingrad was Volgograd. So now we've got a video about the Battle of Stalingrad. A big battle was fought over Leningrad as well so that might have contributed to my confusion.

The narrator mentions the Dieppe Raid. Took some digging to find that one, mostly because 'what did he say?' The allies did attempt to land a force in France back in 1942, but it was a disaster. Command did learn some valuable lessons, so it wasn't a complete loss.
P. S. Pavlov's house was named for Sergeant Yakov Pavlov, who commanded the platoon that seized the building and defended it during the long battle, and not for Ivan Pavlov, the Russian scientist.
Thank you, that filled in a lot of details I was fuzzy on about the battle of Stalingrad.
