Portland is the big dog in the state and it's only a half hour drive away. We go there a couple times a week. Portland also has been having some problems, problems that the city council / mayor have not been able to fix. Things have gotten so bad the governor is stepping in.

Of course the first thing they are going to do is to study the problems for three months. We shall see if they manage to fix anything. I expect it will take a year before we see any meaningful change.
We haven't had any real problems in our trips to Portland. There are always homeless camped out all over downtown, we see them as we drive by, but there never are any where we are going. I suppose businesses make an effort to shoo them away. The only problem I have with Portland is their war on cars. You can always find a place to park within a couple of blocks of where you want to go, but it's going to cost you five to ten bucks, and it's probably going to mean driving around in some garage for five or ten minutes until you find a spot. If you are going to be there for a few hours it's tolerable, but if you only need five or ten minutes it's a giant pain in the watusi.
