Unions have the same weakness as the government, run by people who were elected. People with good looks and personality have a head start, then money, promises, and calling in favors, means the persons with the best ideas and work ethic are not always in charge. Just like congress. Also like government, after the election the voters don't keep an eye on the elected to make sure they do the right thing.
I don't know where the guy comes up with union leaders have "woke" what ever the hell that is, ideas. What I've seen is union leaders want steady improvements to keep them in good favor with the members but the last thing they want is radical changes that might rock their personal boat.
