I found a bunch of stuff I didn't like: AI slop, stuff in low resolution, and one long one by Simon Whistler, but I'm not in the mood to listen to Simon today. This video doesn't talk about mining so much as the political history, and that part was significant.

Burma

Burma / Myanmar seems to have been a real stew-pot guerilla warfare for, I dunno, decades? Came across this story from Jamestown that sheds a little light on some recent conflicts. Introduction below.

Poppy cultivation soared under Ying’s supervision, and illicit extraction of rare earth elements (REE) proved lucrative for his militias in the Kachin BGF-controlled territories. In November 2024, his Kachin fiefdom was dissolved by the rival ethnic rebel group, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), after a months-long military offensive that defeated all three battalions of the Kachin BGF (The Irrawaddy, October 23, 2024; The Irrawaddy, November 29, 2024). 

Despite fleeing from the KIA offensive—allegedly to the PRC—Ying has resurfaced and has been seen interacting with Myanmar junta officials. His business ventures are also partially operational despite the complete annihilation of his militias, making him a still-influential militant figurehead in Myanmar's ethno-politics (Frontier Myanmar, August 15, 2025). 

"Complete annihilation" is not a phrase you hear very often.

The Abandons - Netflix Series

Feels a bit clumsy. Set in the 1850's, we've got two strong women opposing each other over the expansion of a silver mine in the fictional town of Angel's Ridge in Washington territory. On one side we have Lena Headey (famous for her role as Cerci Lannister in Game of Thrones) as Fiona Nolan the matriarch of a small cattle ranch. On the other we have Gillian Anderson (X Files) as Constance Van Ness, matriarch of the local silver mine. The silver mine built the town, but the mine isn't performing as well as they like and Cornelius Vanderbilt, one of the primary investors, is threatening to pull out. Gillian/Constance's solution is to buy out four land owners to expand the mine, but those four owners have no interest in selling. Cornelius is famous for having gotten rich by building a railroad empire, but  there is no mention of mining in his Wikipedia article. However, like all uber-wealthy people he no doubt had his fingers in a number of pies. Early on in the show he visits Angel's Ridge, arriving in a fancy carriage pulled by four horses. Would he have actually made such a visit? Seems unlikely, but hey, it's TV.

Interesting bit. Fiona has made a group of orphans (The Abandons) into her 'family', most of them are teenagers. Our sympathies tend to lie with this group, Constance is obviously the evil capitalist. So I kind of expected the other land owners to side with The Abandons, but a couple of guys don't want to have anything to do with this mess and just want to be left alone. Can't you guys see what's coming down the pike? Are you blind? They're not blind, they're just not looking. I see that a lot in modern day politics.

Anyway, push comes to shove, and then the situation escalates and then it escalates more and we get a spectacular finish.

The smudge labeled Arlit is a town of 80,000 people. The bigger, disorganized jumble to the northwest is an open pit uranium mine. Notice the two airports that appear as scratches in the dirt.

France started mining uranium here back in 1970 and has continued up until a couple of years ago when the Taureg rebels forced out pro-French President Mohamed Bazoum. Now we have people trying to walk across the Sahara desert to reach the Mediterranean Sea and boats that will take them to Europe.

I got this video from The Feral Irishman. While it's not about mining, mining is the main business if Yakutsk. I did another post about boats and mining in Siberia and I wondered if it's the same place. It's not, as you can see by this map:

I tried using Google's create-a-map feature, but it uses Mercator Projection, which make Siberia look bigger than Africa. Siberia is big, but it ain't that big. So I used measure-the-distance on regular Google Map and took a screen shot.

I watched the movie Dune this week. This is the first of the pair of recent movies. I've read the book and I've seen an earlier movie version, but I'm watching this movie and it's nothing like I remember. Oh, I remember some of the characters, but I remember this story being a science fiction thriller, and this movie wasn't that at all. This time the thing that struck me is that the Atreides family packs up their entire company, including their army and their families and all their associated baggage and moves to the most hostile planet in the universe. Okay, on an absolute scale it's not all that hostile, it's got gravity similar to Earth and breathable air, but when you look at it using a human scale, the place is inimical to human life. It's covered with sand. The sun will fry you, the sandstorms will strip the flesh from your bones, and if that's not enough there are giant worms that will swallow you whole. Hell might be a better name for this planet than Arrakis. You would have to be a very loyal follower of the Emperor to accept an appointment to Dune.

But you think about it for a minute and Dune really sounds a whole lot Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Very hot, unpleasant places covered with sand, governed by tyrants, but we still have people willing to pack up everything and move there, and the reason is the same: money. On Dune, it's the spice. In the Mideast, it's oil.

Today I came across a story about how Kazakstan is a world leader in the uranium mining business. Above we have a picture of one of their uranium mines. Looks like a nice place with lots of green. On the edge of a desert, but still pretty nice. Then I look on the map:

and I see it's surrounded by a desert. Just how big is that desert? Big:

The area shown is about 900 miles across, so the mine is at the edge of the desert. The Caspian Sea is at the left hand side of the map and what used to be the Aral Sea is the greenish-white blob near the top center. The Baikonur Cosmodrome is about half way between the mine and the Aral Sea.

What I didn't find is whether the Kazatomprom (the Kazakhstan uranimum mining operation) is enriching uranium, which is what you need to do if you want to use the uranium for anything besides being dense. This led me to Wikipedia's page about Enriched uranium, which was a real eye-opener. Seems the whiz kids have busy cooking up any number of techniques for enriching uranium. There is gaseous diffusion that was used at Oak Ridge during WW2. Then we have second generation gaseous diffusion that uses high speed centrifuges that is many times more efficient. This is the one Iran was using when somebody (Israel?) hacked their centrifuges and caused them to speed up to the point where they destroyed themselves. And that's just the start. People are working on plethora of techniques involving chemistry, lasers and microstructures.

Presumably, guys were working in the mine because it was easier than farming, or was it because they didn't have any land they could farm? Pretty grim in any case. And then there's the crazy 'man engine' they used to raise men out of the mine.

Hearst Castle, known formally as La Cuesta Encantada (Spanish for "The Enchanted Hill"), is a historic estate in San Simeon, located on the Central Coast of California. Conceived by William Randolph Hearst, the publishing tycoon, and his architect Julia Morgan, the castle was built between 1919 and 1947. Today, Hearst Castle is a museum open to the public as a California State Park and registered as a National Historic Landmark and California Historical Landmark.

George Hearst, William Randolph Hearst's father, had purchased the original 40,000-acre estate in 1865 and Camp Hill, the site for the future Hearst Castle, was used for family camping vacations during Hearst's youth.

While William made a fortune, he also started with a fortune that came from his father. Where did George make his money? The Homestake Mine:

The Homestake Mine was a deep underground gold mine (8,000 feet) located in Lead, South Dakota. Until it closed in 2002 it was the largest and deepest gold mine in North America. The mine produced more than forty million troy ounces of gold during its lifetime. . . .

The Homestake Mine is famous in scientific circles because of the work of a deep underground laboratory that was established there in the mid-1960s. This was the site where the solar neutrino problem was first discovered, in what is known as the Homestake Experiment.

San Cristobal Mine & Carbon Dioxide

The screen saver showed a portion of this lake. At least I think it's a lake. We might be looking at ice, we are up around 12,000 feet elevation. It was odd enough to get my attention. Looking at Google Maps I find it is near the San Cristobal Mine. Reading about the mine I come across this odd bit of information.
Silver was discovered at the Hedionda mine over three centuries ago. Repeated attempts to mine the silver ended in failure because of the presence of carbon dioxide gas which caused the death of many miners. The gas continues to issue from the wallrocks of the mine at the present time.

The Hedionda mine was rediscovered in 1896 by the Polish engineer J. Jackowski, who operated the mine from 1896 to 1901 and from 1927 to 1936, after having found a remedy for the carbon dioxide problem. This remedy was simply the excavation of a canal in the floor of the mine workings which allowed the gas to flow out of the mine like water. In addition, mining was confined to work above the adits.

There is some discussion about people in the mining business and the Paguna Mine in Bougainville comes up: "The place was famous for its hugeness and infamous for political reasons."

Panguna is one of the largest copper reserves  in the world, having an estimated reserve of one billion tonnes of ore copper and twelve million ounces of gold. The site was at one time the world's largest open-pit copper/gold mine. The mine caused devastating environmental issues on the island, and the company was responsible for poisoning the entire length of the Jaba River, causing birth defects, as well as the extinction of the flying fox on the island. Dissatisfaction with the company led to an uprising in 1988, led by Francis Ona, a Panguna landowner and commander of the Bougainville Revolutionary Army. The outcome of the uprising was the Bougainville conflict, between the BRA, who sought secession from PNG, and the Papua New Guinea Defence Force. The ten-year conflict resulted in over 20,000 deaths, as well as the eventual closure of the mine on 15 May 1989, and the complete withdrawal of BCL personnel by 24 March 1990. It has remained closed to this day.
There is also an extensive backstory about Willem, one the queen's aides. His family was in Indonesia when WW2 broke out and were imprisoned by the Japanese. Their troubles didn't end when the war did, now we have Sukarno mounting a campaign for independence which meant more chaos and more trouble for, especially for white Europeans.

Mercury Wells

Mercury well on Earth or Oil well on Mercury?

About 120 years ago there was a victorian businessman who specialised in products made using mercury, a liquid metal element. He made stuff such as thermometers, barometers and even the motor driving the time machine he had invented. One day potential investors visited and wanted to know where he got all his mercury from, as it was fairly rare back then, and they wanted to minimise their risks. He said, the mercury for the thermometers and barometers came from holes in the ground in Montana. And for the time machine? they asked of him. He replied "The time machine is from Hg wells."

I went looking for a picture of a mercury well but found that mercury doesn't come from wells, it comes from mines. I sort of knew that, but there's always some whiz kid cooking up something so I wouldn't have surprised to find they were drilling for mercury and injecting high pressure steam or gasoline or something to liberate the mercury from its rock prison and send it up the pipe. Anyway, I go looking for a mercury mine and all I can find are mines that have been closed. There were mines in west Texas, and there were big mines in Spain, but now virtually all mercury comes from China. Tjakistan deserves an honorable mention by producing something less than 10% of what China produces. No one else produces even 1% of the world supply. And there''s no pictures of any operational facilities. I couldn't even find a satellite image on Google Maps. Kind of weird, but given its recently discovered toxic nature, not too surprising.

The Moat Pit - Culross Scotland

I was reading a story on Unherd about the resurrection of Culross, Scotland, an old coal mining town and it mentioned this mine. Coal must have been a valuable commodity back then, much like oil is now.

Most of Scotland's coal in the sixteenth century was mined close to the Firth of Forth and transported by sea. Shipping the coal from the Moat pit at Culross, Fife, was easy because one of its shafts emerged on an artificial island on the foreshore. Boats could come alongside to load directly from it.
This remarkable innovation was developed by Sir George Bruce of Carnock in 1590. Sea water, which leaked constantly into the pit, was drained by a horse-driven chain of buckets and emptied back into the sea. The pit was flooded in a violent storm in 1625 and abandoned.

The pit isn't really visible on Google Maps. It looks like there are a bunch of rocks just under the water. hard to say just where it is.

Giant sinkhole appeared over the weekend in the Atacama Desert. There is an underground copper mine in the neighborhood that might have something to do with it. Sinkholes are just weird.

Just for grins I tried locating it on Google Maps and from the relative positions of the buildings and roads, I think I found it.

The Tyranny of Economics

Some people with their hands on the purse strings have promised South Africa a zillion dollars to develop a giant hydrogen fueled dump truck. This has got to be one of dumbest ideas ever. Hydrogen is like the absolutely worst fuel in the world. Nothing can contain it, it will leak right through the walls of a steel tank and on the way it will make the steel brittle. And if you want to carry enough to get anything done, you need to liquify it, which means cooling it down to like minus a zillion degrees. So you need fancy, vacuum bottle fuel tanks and you need a fancy rig to cool it and compress it. I'm not even going to talk about how you go about getting hydrogen. Like I said, it's the absolutely worst fuel ever.

But some people think they can make it work, so this dump truck is like an experiment. I doubt it will ever be economically viable, but maybe the guys working on it will learn something. And perhaps the guys holding the purse strings will learn something, but I doubt that. They will continue to spout fantasies, collect admirers and gain funding from whoever has money and believes in their fantasies.

Meanwhile, South Africa is serious mess. Yes, most of Africa is a disaster, but South Africa has, or had, a viable economy. Right now unemployment is running at 35%. The place is a disaster.

I'm thinking what might help is if they could put all those unemployed people to work. How about we forgo the dump truck and we put people to work hauling rocks out of the mine? How would this work out? To the spreadsheet we go.


We need some numbers to describe the situation. I pulled these out of the air. Say we have an open pit mine 100 feet deep and we have a road that leads up the side of the pit that is one mile long. A man should be able to carry 50 pounds up that hill. It will probably take him an hour to make the round trip. Yes, a man can walk a mile in 20 minutes, but going up hill carrying a 50 pound weight is going to slow him down, plus you've got turn around time. I think you'd be hard pressed to get eight loads per man in eight hours, especially if you are going to do this every day. 

If a giant dump truck can carry 100 tons, you are going to need 20,000 men to carry that same amount of rock in one eight-hour shift. If these guys are getting paid $5 an hour, it's going to cost $4 million a week or $200 million for a year. No wonder mining companies prefer big trucks.

There's also the problem of how you are going to put all 20,000 men to work. Walking single file, you could have 500 men climbing the hill and another file of 500 men walking back down, so you would need room for 40 lines of men. Giving each man five feet of space means you would need a road 200 feet wide.

Well, if you've 20,000 men, I think you have the manpower to build a road 200 feet wide. Of course it doesn't have to be just one road 200 feet wide, you could have 10 roads 20 feet wide. Depends on the situation. In some bizarre circumstance one 200 foot wide road might be just the thing.

But what are we trying to do here? Are we trying to get the ore out of the ground, or are we trying to put 20,000 men to work? Ideally we would do both, but businesses don't run on what we want, businesses run on cold hard cash.

Hope much is it costing to have 20,000 unemployed men? Are they getting handouts from the government? And you know what they say about idle hands - they're the devil's workshop. How much trouble are these idlers causing?

And $5 an hour is the current minimum wage in South Africa. What if we only pay one dollar per hour? Get a fat tax break from the government for keeping all these blokes busy and you might actually make it work.

Or not. Even if these guys were only getting paid one dollar per hour, labor for a year would still be 50 million dollars. You could probably buy a giant dump truck that would carry 100 tons for under two million dollars. Hard to argue with those kind of numbers. Well, I suppose you could start a war, that would certainly keep a large number of people occupied.

P.P.S. I'm am using color codes in my spreadsheets these days. I'm trying to develop some rules. My only rule so far is that cells that contain formulas are colored light blue. I used a couple other colors here just to point out that they are different. I used tan for a constant and the bright blue and yellow cells get used farther along, so the colors indicate they are the same. White squares are for whatever numbers you want to put in there.

Spreadsheets are handy for almost anything involving numbers. And for anything tougher, there's always Desmos.

The Silver Mountain was mentioned in another video I posted last week, Why Is Latin America still Poor, and it got me curious, so this morning I did a little digging. This video covers it pretty well. 

He doesn't mention the elevation of this place. The town of Potosi, Bolivia, is at 13,400 feet and the top of the mountain Cerro Rico is 15,689 feet, though it is steadily falling due to internal collapses of old mining galleries. As far as I am concerned air stops at 10,000 feet, so anyone living in this town must be a real life spaceman, a person who can survive where there isn't any air.
