Pretty great. Life in a women's prison in Argentina. This time we have a new female bull on the block, Gringa, and she is vicious, mean and nasty. But Gladys, AKA Borges, our female bull, builds on her base of supporters and ultimately prevails.
Everybody is starved for money, so the warden, the guards and the prisoners are colluding in a scheme to rob rich folks. Half a dozen pretty women prisoners get dolled up, load into a van, and are driven into town where they descend onto a place packed with swells where they latch onto a mark, spike his drink and go to his room. When he passes out, the woman takes everything worth stealing. And then they head back to the van and back to prison. They do this a couple three nights a week and it provides a steady source of income. Amazing what you can get away with in big city.

Story opens with a small group of women being transported to prison in a van. One of the women is the girlfriend of a for-real gangster and he stages an attack on the convoy. The van goes off the road and into a river. Boyfriend has a boat, swoops up to the van and rescues his girl but leaves the others chained up in the rapidly sinking van. One older broad manages to get hold of the keys and manages to unlock most of the other women who all swim to shore.
I'm thinking the boyfriend is a for-real shithead. How can you abandon a bunch of women who are likely to drown in this situation? Then I realize, the women are not part of his tribe, so he doesn't care. He's a savage, and he's at war. You're not part of his tribe, so screw you.
Inside the prison, the prisoners are divided into different groups. One is for women who are pregnant or have kids. Women are allowed to keep their kids up till age five, then they go to foster homes. Another group is making porn videos ala Andrew Tate. There are a couple of other groups. Never did figure out exactly what their deal was. Drugs and housekeeping, maybe.
La Borges, the older broad, was part of a criminal organization and understands how these things work. Not much later, Galacia, the gal who escaped, is apprehended and is brought to this same prison. Needless to say, there is bad blood between her and the others who escaped the van. Galacia is vicious and means to be top dog in the prison. Borges is trying organize her girls to stand against her, but it's hard to make an effective team when some of her girls are not too bright, not to mention flakey.
The show is pretty amazing.
P. S. Supposedly you can turn on subtitles AND choose the language in embedded YouTube videos, but I haven't been able to make it work. Turning on the subtitles works, but selecting the language doesn't. Might be Bloggers fault, mucking with the special characters.
Can Architecture Imprison Your Mind? (Sci-Fi Breakdown)

This gal is great. She talks about a lot of stuff that I have thought about over the years. Plus she talks about Sci-Fi movies. She doesn't mention Riddick, but there are probably a bunch of Sci-Fi movies about prisons and we don't have enough time, space or energy to cover them all.
I am ambivalent about the death penalty. On one hand I think it is a suitable punishment for violent crimes. On the other, the trial system is not always a reliable arbiter of justice, as we have seen from the numerous stories of people unjustly convicted. My other objection to the death penalty is how appeals to death sentences go on seemingly interminably, consuming the court's time and resources while more run of the mill cases get short-shrift.
Our prisons are another disaster. I would like to see prisoners put to work on farms or road building. The current system seems to be hamstrung by the prison guard unions, prison building contractors, state budgets, and angry people who just want all the criminals locked up.
Then there is the whole problem of what is the purpose of incarceration. Is it to punish the criminal? Reform him? Educate him? If he can be reformed, reforming would be good. Some of those are too far gone and cannot be reformed, but how do you tell?
GQ has the story. Rédoine Faïd, a real life master criminal and jailbreak artist got his schemes from the movies. Great stuff. Rédoine has appeared here before. Now that I know he is from Algeria, he reminds me of the movie A Prophet, likewise about an Algerian immigrant in France who becomes a master criminal.
Picked this book up at Costco yesterday. Always on the lookout for something interesting and cheap, and this looked promising. The author's name looked familiar, and I could have sworn I read one of his books before, but I cannot find it. The story of that book was about a detective in small coal mining town in eastern Pennsylvania. At least that's the way I remember it. It was kind of gnarly (as in a twisted plot) with some interesting characters. We'll see how this one goes.
This one starts out at the US Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (satellite image above). There are four prisons here, two at the north side of the Fort, and two along the south side. Looking at the map I'm wondering wasn't I just here recently? Yes, I was. virtually. The wreck of the Steamboat Arabia is just downstream about 20 miles as the crow flies, a little more by the river.
Update later in the day: The book I was thinking of wasn't by David Baldacci, it was Grievance, a Rugs Carlucci novel by K.C. Constantine. Carlucci, Baldacci, who wouldn't get confused? I've gotten a couple of chapters into Escape and it's beginning to look like it isn't anything special. But it's easy enough to read, and since I seem to be having a hard time getting enough sleep it's just my speed.
