I remember reading something about this place a while back. This video doesn't have much, but it does give us a bit of the story. The part about the Apollo Program ($257 billion) costing more than the Manhattan Project ($2 billion) was a surprise. The price of gold during the Manhattan Project and at the beginning of the Apollo Program was $35 an ounce. By the end of the Apollo Program the price of gold had tripled, so the $257 billion amount is slightly inflated, but we can pretty safely say the Apollo Program cost roughly one hundred times as much as the Manhattan Project. All the stories about life on the home front during WW2 are all about rationing and shortages of everything. By contrast America was living the high life during the Apollo Program. Funny how a little injection of government spending  during WW2 jump started the economy to the point that we could shoot the moon and not even notice.

Salt River - Randy Wayne White

Picked up a Doc Ford novel, Salt River by Randy Wayne White, at Powell's this afternoon. Waiting for my wife, I open the book and start reading the Author's Note and I am just entranced. What he is describing here sounds just like the political arguments we hear about on social media. Shoot, sounds like any controversy. It's so great I've copied the bulk of it here:

Organisms that contribute to destructive algae blooms are found in most water environs, salt and fresh, throughout the world, year around. "Pollutants" they are not. Indeed, the global food chain would collapse without these microorganisms and macro algae. Keep this in mind the next time you read about small quantities of "red tide organisms" found at your local beach. This is not news. The micro flora are always present-and, sadly, so is the hysteria associated with the word "algae."

There isn't much that biologists agree upon regarding harmful algae blooms (HABs) save for a worldwide consensus that the phenomenon, while naturally occurring and massively destructive, can be enhanced by human activities. The degree to which humans cause, or contribute, to these events is at the historic epicenter of disagreements SO passionate that opinions too often have more in common with theology than science.

In this book, the fictional Doc Ford attempts to provide readers with an overview of the subject that is dispassionate and, above all, factual. This was a challenge. As I explained in an editorial I wrote for the Sunday New York Times (September 29, 2018): “During my 50 years on this coast, I've experienced four killer algae blooms as a fishing guide (1974, '82, '96 and 2004). As a novelist, I've researched the subject, yet my understanding lacks the certainty or rage of those newly acquainted with these blooms." In other words, the more I learn, the less likely I am to be persuaded by those whose convictions are unshakable, for they invariably have a financial stake in whatever "solution" they advocate. This includes organized camps representing the phosphate, sugarcane, and agriculture industries as well as low-profile developers who view agriculture as a waste of acreage that would become a goldmine if bulldozed and transformed into golf courses and gated communities.

This is another element to keep in mind when ferreting through arguments regarding the solutions to red tides.

The newer, booming "environmental industry" also has a stake in the controversy. According to Environmental Business International Inc., a publishing and research firm, the industry grew by 4.8 percent in 2017 and produced $370 billion in annual revenue. This amount dwarfs the $10.1 million collected in 2016 by the Everglades Foundation, one of fourteen Florida-based nonprofit organizations that have a vested interest in the causes and effects of harmful algae blooms. I do not doubt the altruistic motives of these groups, nor do I think it unfair to acknowledge a simple fiduciary fact: to survive, to continue their good work, each must motivate the public sector to provide funding.

In this novel, you will meet Mack, the owner of Dinkin's Bay Marina. Mack has strong opinions on this subject. Even the unflappable Marion Ford cannot convince Mack that hysteria mongering has become a dangerously misleading fundraising tool.

For decades, I've collected newspaper accounts and research on algae blooms that date back to the 1800s. My file contains hundreds of clippings, many acquired at Florida libraries, after scanning through reels of microfiche. The historic overview they provide suggests a predictable cycle, and that cycle has not changed much. When acres of dead fish begin to wash ashore, there is a sustained, communal panic. Civic leaders demand action - and an explanation.

A few examples: According to a study issued by the University of Miami in 1955, a series of lethal red tides between 1844 and 1878 were, according to local fishermen, caused by a "poisonous" flow of freshwater from the Everglades into Florida Bay. A December 1918 headline in the Punta Gorda Herald asserted "Seismic Explosion Under Gulf Kills Many Fish Between Boca Grande and Marco." In July 1937, the St. Pete Times suggested that "the discharge of chemicals from freighters at Port Tampa" was to blame for the sudden death of "fish and eels rarely caught." An article in a November 1940 edition of the Fort Myers New-Press claimed that a massive fish kill was the result of a mysterious "subterranean disturbance." A Miami Herald article, dated February 1954, referenced the devastating red tides of 1947-50, and reported that scientists had traced the cause to excessive amounts of phosphorus found in the Peace River. A year later, in February 1955, the News-Press, under the optimistic headline "Red Tide Seen Under Control in Three Years," cited a study that concluded that phosphate had nothing to do with red tide, then reassured readers that "government scientists" had discovered that dusting algae blooms with copper sulphate (sic) was an 1 inexpensive and effective solution. 

Problem solved? Of course not, and it is ironic to note that, as recently as 1989, the idea of dusting algae outbreaks was revisited - but with phosphatic clay, a residue produced by Florida's controversial phosphate industry.

First Commercial Airline - 1914

They flew one passenger 15 miles from St. Petersburg to Tampa. Tickets were $5 ($150 bucks in today's money, $1500 next week thanks to those morons in Congress). The airline operated for four months until all the snowbirds went back north in the spring. Space.com has the story.

Tony Jannus was the pilot. He was a bit of a celebrity back then. He died in 1916 while flying over the Black Sea. Tony Jannus Distinguished Aviation Society has the story.

There were any number of ways to get from one these cities to the other, but they all took much longer. A boat would probably be the quickest but it would take at least an hour, assuming you could find one that had steam up and was ready to go. Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum has a page about early airlines, which is where I found this map. Current maps are covered with roads, so they don't give a good picture of the situation.

Fun in Miami

Tam mentions the 'Miami gunfight era', which triggers my rathole diving reflex and I come up with a couple of items. Scarface came out in 1983. I didn't realize it was almost a documentary.

The Mutiny Hotel in Miami was a focal point of the drug trafficking industry back around 1980. Looking at the the Mutiny Hotel  on Google Maps I realized that daring daughter and I rented a condo around the corner when we were in Miami three years ago.

The picture is a screen capture from Google Earth. This area on Google Maps is littered with so many labels that the placemark for the hotel is almost invisible. Regular Google Maps used to have a control that would turn off labels, but not anymore.

Newark, Ohio

Swisher Sweets
Back when I was a kid, back when smoking was still a common practice, Swisher Sweets were a popular brand of small cigars. When I was in high school the nearest sizable town was Newark, Ohio, which, it turns out, was the birthplace of these same Swisher Sweets. The company started there back in 1861. By 1895 they are making 300,000 cigars a day.

Talking to a guy I know, he tells me he was plagued by mosquitoes last January, here, in Oregon. Seemed a little far fetched, but winters are pretty mild here, and he insisted, sokay, fine, mosquitoes in January. He showed the county bug man a sample and bug man, said, yup, that's a mosquito. He actually went into some scientific detail about it. Seems there are 40 or 50 different species of mosquitoes living in Oregon. They set up some mosquito traps around the house. Mosquitoes travel in straight lines out from their breeding grounds. They checked on the traps a few days later and the traps showed a definite direction for the source of the mosquitoes. They did some searching and quickly located a covered swimming pool that hadn't been adequate poisoned (chlorinated). Cleaning that up eliminated the mosquito problem.

I'm watching another video about how they control mosquitoes at Disney World and I notice that they are using a whole bunch of animated clips. A search on YouTube turned up the above video. The mosquito traps they use at Disney World give off CO2, which seems to be a mosquito attractor. Don't want to be bothered by mosquitos? Quit breathing.

Or not. When you are holding your breath, it is the increasing level of CO2 that makes you desperate to breath, not the loss of oxygen. As such you can suffocate a person with nitrogen. They aren't getting any oxygen, but their CO2 concentration is not increasing, so they have no sense of being desperate. If you don't get any oxygen you will just pass out and die. It works so well that some states may start using it for executions instead of lethal injection. Some produce warehouses employ a nitrogen atmosphere to help keep produce fresh. Don't be walking in there to get you some veggies, well, not unless you are looking to become fertilizer.

Paris Green, mentioned in the Disney video at top, is a poison. It is made from copper(II) acetate and arsenic trioxide. Didn't I just run into arsenic trioxide? Yes, I did:

This is the Giant Mine at the Great Slave Lake in Northwest Territories in Canada. Makes me wonder how many people died of arsenic poisoning at this mine when it was in operation, or, if nobody died, how did they manage to keep people from being poisoned?

Turkey Point?

I am in Miami this week helping my daughter get settled. We are staying at a high rise in Coral Gables. Looking out from our balcony on the 17th floor, I see what looks like some buildings on the horizon, but out in the ocean. Looking at a map it doesn't seem like there should be anything there, but there it is.

Distance is about 20 miles
Since the only thing in that direction that could be big enough to seen at this distance is the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant, I think that's what it must be.

Florida Aquifers

Water's Journey: Hidden Rivers of Florida

This show was on OPB (Channel 10) last night. It's about the Florida aquifers. Interesting for a couple of reasons:
1) they've got people scuba diving in caves, which is always a hazardous business.
2) they are communicating underwater and through rock.

The show is about a group of people who are trying to map at least some of the Florida aquifers. They have two teams. One team is underwater, underground, wearing scuba gear and carrying a special tracking device. The second team is walking around above ground carrying a GPS (to keep track of their location) and a special radio receiver to track the scuba team.

As you may know, sending radio signals through water is a tricky business. The US Navy can send messages to their submarines, but their data rate is so low it makes GOES look fast. You may remember a scene from the movie "Crimson Tide" where they are aboard the submarine. There is a message coming in , character .... by .... character ..... That was not just a dramatic effect, that's about how fast it goes. A few years ago the Navy wanted to bury an antennae under most of Michigan to improve their communications with submarines. Last I heard the residents of Michigan had put a stop to it. Good thing, too, I think. They were going to be pumping megawatts of very low frequency radio waves into the ground so they could talk to their submarines.

Back to the Florida operation. The scuba divers have some kind device that let's them communicate with each other. A little research on the web leads me to believe it is probably an ultrasonic system. See: http://www.divelink.net The divers voice is picked up by a microphone and converted to an ultrasonic signal that is broadcast into the water. The second diver has an ultrasonic transducer that picks up the sound waves from the water. The receiver converts the electrical signal from the transducer, and sends it to the second diver's earphones.

Tracking is done with radio devices. The transmitter and receiver were specially made for this project by (take a big guess) an ex-Navy radio man. These devices were not extremely high-powered, as the divers and the tracking team were able to carry the devices on their persons without having to resort to carts or sleds.

I saw a couple of other interesting things in this show.
  • The divers appear to be swimming very easily, not having to work very hard, which led me to think they were swimming downstream,which made me a little nervous. What happens if you come to a narrow spot? The flow of water could trap you there. But later on I saw them trying to get through a small spot, and you could see from the sand blowing by them that they were swimming upstream. All of which makes me think the current in the main stream is not very strong.
  • At one point they came across the a homeowners well pump on the end of a pipe stuck right through the middle of natural tunnel.
  • At some points in their travels the scuba divers were almost 200 feet below the surface.
