Cafe Nell is my new favorite place for lunch in downtown Portland. I've been there like four times in the last few months. I'm not quite sure what sets it apart from other places. Could it be the carpeted floors? Pretty nice in any case.

Hi Chuck,
You may be on to something. Carpeted floors may be an indication that the owners give a shit about acoustics, unlike many modern cafés that seem to be based on the idea that the more clatter and noise, and the more hard interior surfaces, the more "vibrant" or "hip". Spare me! Does Café Nell have, in fact, a quiet, peaceful vibe? Could you imagine having a quiet, peaceful conversation with someone there. If so, sign me up!
