The smudge labeled Arlit is a town of 80,000 people. The bigger, disorganized jumble to the northwest is an open pit uranium mine. Notice the two airports that appear as scratches in the dirt.

France started mining uranium here back in 1970 and has continued up until a couple of years ago when the Taureg rebels forced out pro-French President Mohamed Bazoum. Now we have people trying to walk across the Sahara desert to reach the Mediterranean Sea and boats that will take them to Europe.
