We've been watching Turn of the Tide which is set in the Azores. There is a big shootout at a lighthouse, and then this video pops up. So now I'm looking at lighthouses in the Azores and there are a bunch of them, so a plotting we go.

At least I think it's the lens in the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse. Google seems to think this lens is in the Grays Harbor Lighthouse in Westport, Washington. Looking at some images, I kind of think it's from Chicago.

The lighthouse is just off the coast of northwest Oregon. Highway 26 (near the bottom of the map) runs by my house on its way to Portland. The Columbia River is at the top of the map. It runs by Astoria on its way to Portland. Area shown is about 30 miles square.

We've been watching Little Women, an insane Korean TV series. I have more to say about the show, but right now I just want to mention the Fullerton Hotel. The leading couple are attempting to collect 70 billion won (roughly 50 million US dollars) that has been siphoned off from a politician's web of illegal finances. When you are operating in this rarified atmosphere, what's a few zillion won for a nice place to stay? So the guy books the girl a room at the Fullerton. While the manager is giving her a tour of the place he mentions that it was built by the Duke of Devonshire. While there is such a Duke, and has been since the 14th Century, I could find no connection to Singapore, much less the hotel. I wonder if this is something that was taken from the original book by Louisa May Alcott.

The Fullerton was built in the 1920s and was originally an office building. The cupola was a lighthouse but is now a restaurant.

Singapore is 3,000 miles from Seoul, South Korea, where most of the show is set. So just a short six hour plane ride about the same distance as from coast to coast in the USA.

I came across a smaller version of this picture as a meme about Jehovah's Witnesses. It took a little pointing and clicking to find out where it was. When I did, I tried to locate it on Google Maps, but it's not there:

Lighthouse painted white, lantern red. Ingvar Hreinsson has a closeup photo, Sigmar Þór Sveinbjörnsson has a photo, and Steve Fernie has a distant view from the sea, but the islet is not seen in Google's satellite view. Photos and videos of this isolated and "terrifying" lighthouse suddenly went viral in July 2016. Located on the largest of three isolated rocks about 13 km (8 mi) west northwest of Heimaey. Accessible only by helicopter (with an experienced pilot). VIT-278; Admiralty L4802; NGA 18080.

There are several other chunks of rock sticking out of the sea in the same general neighborhood, but this one does not exist.

It must have been quite a feat of engineering to build this thing. Helicopters were not really a thing in 1939. Igor Sikorsky made his first flight that year.
