The second season of True Detective has started and we are enjoying the heck out of it, even though it's very frustrating to have to wait a week between episodes. The main appeal of this show is atmospheric, the look and feel. There is a plot and there are characters and they may be very good, but they pale in significance compared to the feelings the show conveys.
     I'm looking for a music video to put in this post and I'm not finding much, some teasers (which are short) and some tunes, but only still images. So I start looking for something by T Bone Burnett on account of he gets credit for some of the music, and I find this. While it may not be a great song, it's got some great shots of cars. I think I've seen some of these scenes before, and here too. Oh yeah, there's some girls in there, too.
    T Bone also produced Man of Constant Sorrow  (for the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?) which was written by Dick Burnett. I suppose if you wander around long enough you are bound to cross over the same track.

Shyboys - Smile

This song closes tonight's Netflix movie. Homefront is a totally typical Jason Statham action movie, complete with several flavors of bad guys, all of whom get their asses kicked. Fine Friday night entertainment. This tune caught my ear, sounds a lot like what we were hearing on True Detective. No surprise since they are both set in rural Louisiana. Screenplay by Sylvester Stallone. Rambo can write? Quelle supreeze! This might be a good time to mention that another big action hero, Steven Seagal, is a deputy sheriff down there, and has been for years.
    Great line from Steven Boone's review: "Statham’s discomfort at having to extend the olive branch when he’d rather jam it in the other guy’s windpipe is the film's most suspenseful stunt."

.Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. We started watching the HBO series True Detective. It is a heck of  show. It is nominally a story about a couple of detectives investigating a murder down in Louisiana, but that is just like the frame for the canvas of a painting. You know how our society is built on rules and laws, and everything we build is laid out in straight lines with square corners? Our society functions as well as it does because of this. But people aren't made of straight lines and square corners, and sometimes they don't fit in the box they have carved out for themselves. That's what this show is about.
