The Dakar Rally is being held in South America these days. It started in Buenos Aires yesterday. Trying to dig out some info I ran into a couple of new-to-me terms. Explanations paraphrased from Wikipedia.

Aeolian pertains to the wind's ability to shape the surface of the Earth.

Erg is a broad, flat area of desert covered with wind-swept sand.

Rally raid is cross country rallying, as opposed to a conventional Rally, which uses street-legal cars.

Southern Cone is the portion of South America from the around the Tropic of Capricorn to the southern tip. It comprises:

  • Argentina,
  • Chile,
  • Paraguay,
  • Uruguay, and
  • Southern Brazil.
High life expectancy, the highest Human Development Index of Latin America, high standard of living, significant participation in the global markets and the emerging economy of its members make the Southern Cone the most prosperous macro-region in South America.
