Mob Rule

Printing press and a composing stick circa 1770 - Encyclopædia Britannica

From what I gather from the media, it seems that a large segment of the population is, or will soon be, in dire straits. Large numbers of people have become unemployed due to the COVID-19 inspired lockdowns. The homicide rate in several large cities has doubled. I expect it is going to get much worse before it gets better.

We are victims of our own success. Our country became so rich and powerful since WW2 that we relaxed our standards for acceptable behavior and beliefs. This newly liberalized environment let people express ideas that were previously verboten. Some of these people were very vocal, and they found an audience among people who felt they had somehow been given the short end of the stick.

In truth, economic development in the last few decades has benefited those who already were established. A few additional people managed to get on board the gravy train, but places on this train are very limited. Most people are stuck on the ground watching the gravy train speed by just over their heads.

What we have failed to do is to find worthwhile employment for all the people who were laid off, made redundant or otherwise forced out. Nowadays, the only possible employment seems to be working for one of the package delivery services, joining the military, or becoming a soldier for one of the drug cartels.

How bad is it going to get? This article about the financial shenanigans in 18th century France might give you some idea.

Who are the bad guys here?

IAman went horse back riding yesterday. He took some photos and then made a video. He added some music and then he uploaded it to YouTube. Shortly thereafter he got this copyright notice. It is very weird.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom | Official Trailer | Netflix
Netflix

What we have here is a small group of black musicians trying to record a record in Chicago in the 1920's. Ma is a successful singer. She has made records before and they have sold well so she is confident of her position. Levee is a talented trumpet player who just cannot stop telling everyone how he is great he is. The white guys running the recording studio are near incompetent. Basically, what we have is people bellyaching loudly and longly.

The best part for me was seeing the mechanical recording machine. It cuts the master disk directly from the microphone. That probably amounted to less than a minute of screen time.

P.S. Denzel Washington produced this film. He has made a bunch of movies and some of them have been pretty great. This one reminds me of the movie Fences that he starred in. Not many characters, not much action, but lots of people being loudly disagreeable. I didn't care for Fences either.

La Mante

Another serial killer murder mystery. This one is set in Paris, though we don't actually see any of the city, must be out in the suburbs. Back in the 1990's a woman (the Mantis) kills eight men. She is caught, convicted and sentenced to a zillion years in prison. To spare her young son the knowledge that his mother is a serial killer, her death is faked and her existence is kept a secret.

Now someone is replicating her horrendous crimes. The mantis offers to help the police catch this copycat if they will let her see her son.

The story is far fetched, but it's pretty well told. It's entertaining enough if you are tired and just want something to watch after a hard day of dealing with everyday bullshit.

Netflix, in French with English subtitles, 6 episodes, one hour each.

Constant Sorrow

O Brother, Where Art Thou? - Constant Sorrow [1080p]
Attoolomeu

I've been a little under the weather the last couple of days. I've been working on a couple of posts, but I keep getting distracted, so I thought I'd take a little break and this popped up. It's not only a fine tune, it's a great scene.

Jerry Shooting Cars

Vehicle Vs. XXmm (CRAZY results we didn't expect!)
Jerry Miculek - Pro Shooter

Clyde preferred cars with steel bodies. Made me think that guns back in the 30's must have been some weak sisters. Jerry shows us the difference.

Jerry Miculek has appeared here a couple of times before.

Airplane of the Day

MiG-15 at airport outside Piešťany, Slovakia

The MiG-15 first flew in 1949. It gave us trouble during the Korean War and again during the Vietnam War. North Korea, that hotbed of tried and true technology, still employs them as training aircraft. The commies built more than 18,000 of them.
