| Mustang P-51B Dorothy II |
I wonder how many of you remember the TV series 12 O'Clock High. It was a staple of my life in high school. Looking at the picture above we've got a glorious P-51 in the foreground, but look at the fleet of bombers in the background. It was crazy how much industrial production went into building war machines for that conflict.
Picture comes from the cover art for a plastic model kit made by Eduard from Czech Republic.
Over 15,000 P-51 fighters were built, roughly 2,000 were P-51B. The bulk were the P-51D which had the bubble canopy. Looking at Wikipedia's list of surviving aircraft, it looks like there are over 300 P-51s still around.
"Dorothy II" is a well-known P-51B Mustang (P-51B-15-NA, serial 43-24857) flown by Capt. Robert M. Barkey of the 318th Fighter Squadron, 325th Fighter Group ("Checkertail Clan"), 15th Air Force in Italy, 1944. - Google
