Minor household repairs

It's 3:58 PM as I write this. Now I'm going to paste some stuff and I dictated to Gmail on my phone:

I was in the kitchen this morning when a lens fell out of my wife's eyeglasses. Taking a look I can see that the frame is not broken but the screw holding the frame around the lens has just has come undone. Amazingly the screw is still in place in the frame. All I had to do was dig out my Jeweler's screwdrivers and tighten it up. Took a look at the other side and found that that screw was loose as well. Tightened it too.
Wall Mount Toilet Paper Holder
Similar to what I was dealing with

Now we move on to the toilet paper holders. We just had a minor remodeling project done on our house and my wife noticed that a couple of the new toilet paper holders were loose. So I go take a look. They're attached to the wall by little brackets that are attached to the wall with a couple of wood screws. The TP holder hooks over the top of this bracket and is secured with a tiny set screw that comes in from the bottom. Typically these screws are slotted and are all you need to tighten them is a tiny screwdriver like a Jeweler's screwdriver.

Precision Screwdriver Set
Cheap set from Amazon. My set only has six screwdrivers. Can't get small sets like that any more, everybody has gotten fancy.

But not these, these use an Allen wrench (like the one in the picture above) so I go looking for my Allen wrenches and all I can find is a pile of such wrenches left over from stuff that we bought that had to be put together (IKEA furniture, maybe? Who knows? It's ancient history.) There is one tiny Allen wrench in the bunch and it turns out to be the right size so we're golden. All I have to do is loosen the Allen screw, remove the TP holder and tighten the two wood screws that are holding the bracket to the wall, put the TP holder back on and tighten the set screw at the bottom. One done now on to the other this one. It's a bit tedious tightening that set screw using that little Allen wrench because you can only get half a turn and then you have to take it out, turn it back and put it back in before you can give it another half turn.

Ohio Forge Driver Bit Set
This looks just like the set of bits I bought a zillion years ago. Still have most of them.

So I go dig out my old Ohio Forge set of quarter inch drive bits, look through there and found a 2 mm Allen wrench bit AKA a hex Drive bit. It was the smallest one in the box but as luck would have it, it was the right size so that made things a little easier.

Magic Screwdriver

I could use my magic screwdriver and there was enough slop that I was able to get the bit in the screw and get the screwdriver on the bit and still be able to turn the screwdriver without having to take it out and reposition it.
Toggle Bolt
I call 'em wing bolts

But now I take the TP holder off and try and tighten up the wood screws and they don't want to tighten up. They're just feeble and sorry. Loosen them up and find that they aren't wood screws at all but these Wing type expansion bolts. Well they aren't working. I take them all the way out* and I can see that on one of them, one of the Wings is jammed up in the hole, so it's not were it is supposed to be (which is in back of the drywall) so it's not really holding. So I screw the screw in, push it back, take the screw out and naturally it falls down to the wall so now we're going to have to do something else.

LEYU Self Drilling Drywall Anchors
I had a small package of these and they worked great as long as you have virgin drywall and aren't trying to use a previous hole.

Back downstairs, scrounge around in my box of screws and find a plastic screw anchor that I think my work, but the whole is too big. The plastic anchor is not even going to get a grip on the drywall. Back downstairs again, more rummaging, this time I find it a larger Wing type anchor I take that up surely this will work and it would except that the screw is too big to go through the hole in the bracket. Back downstairs get the drill, a drill bit and a pair of vise grips to hold the bracket while I'm drilling it because I managed to get the lower expansion screw back in and you know we'll fight with that later. Put the new expansion bolt in tighten everything up and it looks good. Try and mount the TP holder on the bracket and it seems the screws have caused the bracket to sink into the paint on the drywall so the TP holder can't get a grip on the bracket. Back down to the garage find a piece of wood, cut off a chunk about 3/4 of an inch wide by about maybe an inch and a half long about an eighth of an inch thick. Loosen the screws and slide it under the bracket. Tighten the screws back up the and bracket is now a little proud of the wall but let's see what happens.  Set the TP holder on it and it looks great, tighten up the set screw on the bottom and we're finally done. Except for putting all the stuff away which was much more pleasant than crawling around on the floor and trying to fight with these ornery little bits.

* Because this is an outside wall it is full of insulation so the wing device doesn't just fall into the abyss, it's just hanging there in limbo.

It is now 4:21 PM. Probably took me twice as long to edit my transcription as it took me to record it. Now for some pictures. Pictures posted and now it's 4:40 PM. One more scan and then I expect I'll post it. Now 4:51 PM. I was interrupted by a phone call and a trip upstairs to get a package from the front door, and I forgot the Jeweler's screwdrivers picture. It's now 4:58 and I'm done. I probably climbed 20 flights of stairs today.

P. S. Forgot picture of Magic Screwdriver. The pushbutton in the butt end of the handle fell apart today. I should probably look for a new one. I really like the the little flashlights in the handle that shown right along the shaft, but I should probably give up thinking I am going to repair them some day. The pushbutton has pushed me right over the edge.

6 in 1 Multitool Screwdriver

This is the closest one I found on Amazon. Doesn't have bright yellow, non-rolling handle though.
