Email Versus Text Messages

Visualized: Desktop vs. Mobile Global Web Traffic Over Time

Email seems to be falling out of favor. Except for a couple of small groups, everyone I know prefers text messaging. Text messaging is fine, but I don't like looking at pictures on smartphones - the screen is just too small. I like big screens for images. So I got to wondering - does anybody even use desktop computers any more? So I asked Google "How many people use desktop computers to surf the web?" and this is what I got back:

About 39.5% to 58.3% of global web traffic and internet access involves laptops or desktop computers, as mobile devices now handle the majority of online activity.

Global Web Traffic Share

• Desktop vs. Mobile Traffic: Desktop computers account for roughly 39.5% of global web page views and traffic, while mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) make up the remaining 60.5%.

• User Reach: Roughly 58% to 61.5% of online adults report using a laptop or desktop computer to access connected services and the web.

• Engagement Time: Even though fewer total visits happen on desktops, desktop users spend more time per session and view more pages per visit compared to mobile users (roughly 60% of total time spent on websites occurs on desktop).

Now that I think about it, I suspect desktop PC use has probably not declined that much, it's just that all the people who don't have desks are getting on the web via their smartphones.
