A comment on my previous post got me looking into this. It's quite the story involving royalty, peasants, theft, murder, corrupt government officials, fouled diplomatic relations and it's been going on for 28 years. Wikipedia has a summary. Vice News has slightly fuller story (2 years old).

While I was poking around I also came across this entertaining story about another blue diamond.
