What we have here is a promotional video for a shipboard automatic mortar. Main difference between a mortar and a cannon is that the mortar barrel has a smooth bore, not a rifled one like cannons. Of course, our main battle tank the M1 Abrams is also a smooth bore, but that's on of account of it being such a bad-ass it don't need no steenking rifling. Mortars shoot shells with fins and at much lower velocity than a cannon. Cannons have more range. They are good for killing people and blowing things up in the next town. Mortars are for destroying the enemy who is just over the next hill.
So this thing can basically be used at low elevation like a tank for close in stuff, or elevated for over the hill stuff like a conventional mortar. They show this gun holding its heading while the boat goes through some gyrations, but you'll note that the water is smooth as glass. I wonder how well it would do when the water it gets a little rough.
Anyway, there was some discussion of where a boat like this might be useful, and AngryFinn mentions that it could be really useful in Finland if the Russkies ever come calling because
The Finnish Archipelago Sea is the Europe's largest archipelago area, and it has the largest amount of islands (40 000) in a one island group in the world.

I've noticed that there were a bunch of islands in this area before, but I didn't realize there were 40,000 of the dang things, and there are going to be more or less in the future:
The islands began emerging from the sea shortly after the last ice age. Due to the post-glacial rebound the process is still going on, with new skerries and islands being slowly created and old ones enlarged or merged. The current rate of rebound is between 4 and 10 millimetres a year.So in ten years these rocks are going to be 2 to 4 inches higher. In a hundred years, assuming this rate doesn't change, and I doubt that it will, we're talking ice-age time-frames here. In a hundred years they are going to be two to four feet higher out of the water. Unless global warming catches on.

Isostatic Rebound is a mistaken anomaly. What is really happening is that the Earth is growing and as it increases in size the sea levels fall worldwide. We have been hampered in this discovery because the reality is clouded with the Post Glacial Rebound concept which is a fallacy. We will sooner or later have to relinquish all these outdated concepts and com into the light of reality. We cannot keep blindingly adopting Agazzis and Darwins mistakes from two hundred years ago as being relevant in todays context. We have to open our eyes. Patagonia is in South america and entirely remote to the North where Agazzis said was prone to Isostacy. The fact is that the apparition occurs worldwide as land appears to rise and sea levels ebb lower. This is what we call Isostacy but in reality is earth growth and the resultant sea level recession. Its mot that the Islands are pushing up by 2 inches every ten years it is that the sea level is falling as earth expansion takes place. Its happening all around the world not just in the Baltics. laska is showing us what is really happening around the world but we have to understand what we are seeing. The Glaciers are melting and the sea level is falling. (New York Times Article) This is not occuring in Alaska alone but all over the north, Hudson Bay is also getting shallower and the lake levels are falling all over Canada the Great Lakes and the world. Some have totally disappeared.. But then we come up against the usual hype of “Rising Sea” levels and there we stop dead in our tracts instead of going with what we see. If you look at my Videos “The Mysterious Receding Seas” on yuotube you will see my latest expose on Atlantic City New Jersey. I purposely went there this summer to film the seas recession. I show in the Video how all the great Hotels Trumps Taj Mahal and the Playboy hotels were all built in the last thirty years on the beach land that was left behind by the sea. So what do we learn from the Jersey experience. We know that New Jersey has known for the last forty years that the sea is receding and leaving behind precious foreshore land. So they have capitalized on that knowledge and are cultivating new land from the sea everyday. They then sell off the land to developers for $10Million per acres to benefit the school fund. SO if New Jersey knows this and has been researching old surveys back to 1776 to access the land they have accumulated since Independence from Britain why are we still touting rising seas levels. They are doing so in order to charge retroactive land taxes.

So why can we learn from New Jersey, Once and for all that seas are receding.So why is the EPA in New York trying to restore the dried up swamps in Jamaica Bay at the cost of 55 Million when they will just go dry again in a few years as the sea recedes and drains them. This is what has happened to all the swamps along the eastern seaboard of the United States since three hundred years ago.
