I can explain it!

Handwaving Freakoutery has a post up this morning about the sad state of gun laws in the USA, which includes this graph of number of gun laws per state. Blue laws are effective, orange laws are useless. As you can see, most gun laws are useless.

Useless gun laws predominate the gun law landscape

He concludes with this:

If we were a smart people, who sought a national gun policy compromise that makes any sort of sense, all those states on the left of the graph would trade all that orange back for a little more blue.

That they are immensely unwilling to do so is a tell. Either they don’t understand the science, or they aren’t actually interested in promoting policy that works in the first place.

Yeah, okay, people are nuts, politicians are selling fairy tales and people are buying them.

Then I'm reading Bayou Renaissance Man's take down of charlatan preachers and I come across this line:

Africa's a very superstitious place . . .

Sheet, man, it ain't just Africa. We got them superstitious fools everywhere. It's what makes us human, unfortunately.

We don't want kids running around the neighborhood playing cowboys and indians with real guns so we pass a law against it.
We tell the kids it's illegal so most don't do it but there's always a couple that do anyway. They get punished because it's illegal so they don't do it again. But there's bound to be one repeat offender likely for spite. Are you telling me that law doesn't work?
No law is going to stop everyone, none.

There's a law against murder but it still happens, so I guess that law doesn't work and we might as well repeal it.
When Mom yells settle down, don't make me come up there... it's not the command it's the fear..
Laws don't stop anything, it's the fear of legal consequences that helps.
