I didn't get much 20th century Chinese history when I was in school. Something about Japan bad, and we helped the Chinese fight against the bad Japanese, but that was about it. Only much later did I hear that the Communists abandoned the fight and marched West and hid out until the Japanese were defeated, then came back and kicked the war weary nationalists over the straight to Taiwan.

Anyway, Kinmen Island looked familiar because it's the home of the Black Dragon Howitzers.
