Machinist Puzzle

Free the Nut! (Not What You Think)
Inheritance Machining

Guy using a lathe and a milling machine to make a captive nut puzzle. Unlike some machining videos, this one moves along at a steady pace, no long shots of turning or milling a part, just short clips that are just long enough for you to get the gist of what he's doing. Plus it's a puzzle for the viewer. He shows you all the pieces, so you might be able to figure out how it works.

Wes' Last Minute Gift Ideas for Hopeless Nerds - Ft. Watch Wife Work
Watch Wes Work

Don't know if I need any tools, but I enjoy listening to Wes and I like tools so it's double good.

I'm pretty much fully recovered from the hip surgery I had this summer though I am still learning how to walk. My hip joint deteriorated slowly over a couple of years, so the part of my mind that controls walking was slowly able to adapt to the problem. But then I had the surgery and now everything is suddenly better, but my mind is still adjusting. One thing I noticed is that I don't seem to be able to walk a straight line, I kind of weave a little. Of course now I'm wondering if I ever did walk in a straight line, and now I'm wondering about people in general. Somebody should investigate.

Anyway, since I am now mobile I can pick some tools and start fixing things around the house. But while my hip was deteriorating, I gave a bunch of tools over to Osmany's care. I talked to him about this and he brought (four) five-gallon buckets full of tools over and dropped them off. It's like 200 pounds of stuff. I have not even begun to sort it out.

Beside tools, Wes also mentions some books, which prompts me to wonder how many books I read this year. It seems to me I only read one book this year, A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge. Checking over this blog, it appears that I read about half a dozen books. I suspect the Vinge story seems like the only one because it  took me about four months. I finally finished it a couple of weeks ago. I mostly read it when I was waiting for someone, but that was okay because it's a complicated story. Each little bit that I read contained enough ideas and concepts to mull over that it would keep me occupied for a while. I did read maybe half a dozen other books this year. On my daughter's recommendation I have started reading Babel by R. F. Kuang. It looks promising.

Air Benders

UNREAL extreme compilation
Adrenaline Vibe

3 little bits, but it's the third one that takes the cake: a couple of guys in wingsuits fly into the back of what looks like a Hercules C-130 cargo plane. They just glide in, stop and stand up. This is while the airplane is flying, mind you. Pretty sure they jumped from another airplane higher up, then they had to fall far enough to get enough speed so they could catch up to the cargo plane. Then you have to figure out how much speed you need to bleed off. Your relative speed wouldn't need to be too great, maybe 10 or 20 MPH. Even that fast would hurt if you ran into something like a bulkhead, or a commanding officer.

Reminds me of the Goldeneye airplane stunt.

LA to Vegas

Must be motorcycle week here at my house. On one hand I've got IAman yakking about buying a new bike and now I've got YouTube serving up tasty little motorcycle videos.

Goldeneye

James Bond 007: GoldenEye - Official® Trailer [HD]
TrailersPlaygroundHD

Great Bond movie. All kinds of crazy technology, some improbable, but most of it has some basis in reality. I do wonder about the golden gem mounted in a frame that is apparently needed to send the fire command to the Goldeneye satellite.  Now with all the complicated stuff I've learned about since then, I wonder if you could somehow encode a passcode in the gem, a passcode that can be extracted using a relatively simple scanner. Convoluted and cumbersome, but then people are always dreaming up complicated and cumbersome procedures. Still, haven't heard of anyone encoding anything in oversize gemstones, but you know what they say about the Internet - if you can imagine it someone has already done it.

Somewhere in the middle of the movie, Bond and Natalya, the Bond girl, are arrested by the Soviet military and taken to a prison in Moscow. The big, bad villain shows up during their interrogation and shoots the interrogators. Bond uses the ensuing chaos to escape. He picks up an AK-47 from a dead guard and then he and the girl are running for their lives, down the halls, around corners and through doors. Simultaneously he is engaged in a running firefight with Soviet soldiers. He is mowing them down like ten pins. And then he steals a tank.

But let's stop for a minute before we run off into the wonderful tank fantasy, let's stop and count the number of rounds he fired while running through the halls of the prison. I mean, he fired a bunch. A banana clip for AK-47 holds 30 rounds. I am pretty sure he fired more than 30 rounds. He could easily have picked up another magazine along the way, I mean the hallways are littered with dead Soviet soldiers, but how many magazines would he have needed? Did he fire 20 rounds or 200? Or was it two thousand? Enquiring minds want to know. Now I could go back and rewatch that scene and count the number of shots fired, but then I got an idea. Let's ask ChatGPT, so I did:

User

In the movie Goldeneye, how many shots from his AK-47 did James Bond fire during his escape from the Russian prison in Moscow?

ChatGPT

In the movie "GoldenEye," during James Bond's escape from the Russian prison in Moscow, he uses an AK-74 assault rifle. Bond fires a total of 76 shots from the AK-74 during this action-packed sequence. This moment is part of the larger escape scene that involves the use of different weapons, including the tank, making it one of the memorable action sequences in the film.

And there you go. More useless information supposed to fire my imagination.

Dear Child

Dear Child | Official Trailer | Netflix
Netflix

Pretty creepy murder mystery. Woman and two kids are held captive in a bunker where they have a 'happy family' though the girl is the only one who is happy though she could be lying, which wouldn't be surprising give the twisted environment she has experienced in this bunker. The woman manages to escape and then the real mystery starts. Who kidnapped and imprisoned her? Who is the dead guy they found in the bunker? How did he escape detection for so long? How many other people are involved? How many other people has he killed? It all gets unwound at the end, but none of it is what you suspected.

Goldwing for the Win

Honda GOLDWING Off Roading!
Matt Spears

IAman reports:
After my recent visit to VA optician (all is good) I stopped by Honda dealer.
The Honda Rebel is the most comfy and easy bike to get on.
Keanu Ngythe salesman mentioned that there are Goldwing off road enthusiasts (so bike weight shouldn't be a problem?)
Back home researching I found this highly entertaining video.
