Top Gun

Top Gun (1986) Official Trailer - Tom Cruise Movie
Movieclips Classic Trailers

I don't understand my wife. She claims she doesn't like science fiction, but she watched all four of the Matrix movies with me when the new one came out a few months ago. As you may have heard there is a new Top Gun movie out and she is all pumped up to see it, so we watched the old one to refresh our memories? Or maybe to get pumped up, in the groove so to speak, so as to best appreciate the new Top Gun movie.

The old one came out in 1986, which is like 36 years ago. We went to see it when we were newlyweds. That was a while ago.

We watched the original last night, it's still pretty great. I remember hearing that it costs a million dollars a day to operate an aircraft carrier. Looking at how complex the whole system is, machines and people, it's pretty amazing that it works at all. And good grief, what a headache for the commander. Don't lose any zillion dollar aircraft and try and keep your crew safe. I suspect they lose a few people on every voyage, somebody falls overboard or gets wacked in the head by big piece of steel. That's the price we pay to keep our spear sharp. You need to be very careful when working with big machines.

Someone in our family tree, or family circle, I forget who, was working on an aircraft carrier and was accidentally blown over by a jet engine exhaust blast. He sufferred a head injury that the Navy apparently never acknowledged.

Did you see "The Martian"? Amazing movie, especially in a theater.
