On ocean passage a thousand miles from the nearest land. Where the air is so clean and pure that the starlight is undiminished right down to the horizon at all points.
I stood middle watch. I turned low all lights. Lo, a bright light at my 12 o'clock. Whoa, it's gotten brighter. It must be coming closer. Now I detect it moving yet our bearing is unchanged.
Nothing on the radar. That vessel must not have a signature. After these many minutes, no change in bearing, action is required. I turn to port. Wow, that was close!
Wait, she must be tracking us. She's still right there! I've seen before such hijinks on the high seas. Screw this guy. Come the morning twilight I am the dummie.
I took action to evade a planet. Fatigue and autokinesis is my excuse.
Same situation, North Pacific, alone on deck, I swear I see a cruise ship, lit up like a casino, heading straight for us. Code brown for sure. So I woke the Skipper who came on deck. He stared at it for a minute and then we both saw it. It was a trick of how the clouds were obscuring the rising moon in a specific shape. Whew!
