Thaw

The Thaw (HBO MAX) English Trailer
Malaysia

Another psycho-killer murder mystery, this one is set in Szczecin, Poland, and it's pretty good. Szczecin is a major seaport so there are lots of shots of big ships and loading docks and a few scenes have our people messing about in boats. A very gloomy film, seems like all the scenes are dark and if they are outside, it's raining. Kind of like Oregon this time of year. Our lead detective is a young widow with a young daughter. Her husband has been found shot dead. She and her father-in-law think he was murdered, but the official ruling is suicide so they are just going to have to live with that. The actor playing the chief of police does a good job in his role of keeping his crew on track.

Spoiler - there is a whole series of creeps being creepy, but what started this whole thing was a prosecutor who wanted to convict a guy (Kreutz) for a brutal murder, but he managed to get his hands on the murder weapon and concealed it because if it came to light it would reveal that someone else committed the murder and he wouldn't get his conviction. I got the impression Kreutz was a pretty vicious criminal, he just didn't commit this particular murder, so while his conviction may have technically been wrong, he did deserve to get locked up, but that all happened ten years earlier so we don't really know and the show doesn't tell us.
