The IBM 360 Will Roll Right Over You

Reading & Northern 2102 blasts out of Port Clinton

JMSmith points out a post by Richard Cocks - Oh, For a Competent Elite - wherein he bemoans the state of our world and as an example tells us of some trouble he has had with air travel, which prompted me to comment:

Airlines, like Amazon and credit card companies use large computer systems. They mostly work, but when they fail, any attempt to correct the error is going to be an exercise in frustration. Don’t waste your time. Arguing with one of these systems is like arguing with a freight train. You can yell all you want but the train don’t care and if you try to impede them they will roll right over you and crush you flat. I don’t know but I suspect that problems with airlines can be alleviated by buying first class tickets.

In the 70's I did a ton of flying doing Field work for Westinghouse Steam Turbine. They would give us coach tickets with an open return which meant it was good for any date. The official policy was if the flight you want is full just upgrade to first class, no questions asked... so everyone came home first class... always.
747 redeye(2am) Chicago to Philly, booked up.
Anyway, there's more legroom, butt room, and elbow room. I think the food was the same, maybe better dishes/flatware. Same reading materials. All the stewardesses were attractive, but first class they may more senior(older). Some airlines at some airports have a first class waiting lounge.
If the plane goes down I don't think they would expend more effort to recover my body.
There is, or at least was, a huge difference in price.
