What we have here is a bunch of 14th century religious fanatics attacking a 21st century, technologically proficient bunch of infidels. Never underestimate the power of fanaticism. Or bit twiddling.
Is it better to have continuous, small scale conflicts, or intermediate major conflagrations followed by periods of peace? Human beings evidently require a certain amount of violent conflict in their lives. You can have it in big doses like World Wars 1 & 2, or you can have it at a low level, every day, forever, in every place that has a couple of zillion people.
