they're related to civets (also known as civet cats). AFAIK, these things are off in their own family (not related to actual cats or dogs) but they are carnivores (so yes, they'd bite you, given the chance).
Civets are the animal that musk was gathered from back in the day. I'm guessing they have a synthetic form now because the animal is usually killed to get it. Also, the civet is the animal (in)famous for that kind of coffee beans (kopi luwak) that passes through the intestinal tract of the animal first....yeah, the things people will pay for.
