I Couldn't Believe How Rich America Was. We Never Stood A Chance.
This story runs for about an hour. There is no video, just the one still image. It's the story of one German prisoner-of-war's experience after being captured near the end of WW2. I found his observations and explanations fascinating.
POW Travels Across the USA |
He and his fellows spent a lot of time traveling on trains, sometimes in comfort, sometimes not.
We hosted like 400,000 German POWs during WW2 but only about 4,000 Japanese. Tojo's propaganda machine had made the Japanese insane.

Holy shit, what a great find, thank you!
There are lots of reasons for the relative disparity of German POWs vs Japanese. Reluctance to surrender, sure. Reluctance of the US Marines to take prisoners also. And in a mostly sea and air power war it can be a bit hard to surrender when your ship or plane is going down in flames.
Interestingly there was an effort to teach German POWs all about mom, baseball and apple pie. Well, mostly about democracy and such but they did attempt to get them to play baseball and basketball. The latter took to some extent. The former, not at all. T.
