Molecular Models Using Legos

The 8 studs on a 2 × 4 Lego brick conveniently represent the outer shell of electrons for carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms. We used Lego bricks to model these atoms, which are then joined together to form molecules by following the Lewis octet rule. A variety of small biological molecules can be modeled in this way, such as most amino acids, fatty acids, glucose, and various intermediate metabolites. Saw GIF of this but I couldn't figure out just what it was supposed to be doing. Awful lot of monkey motion for a clock, and it wasn't clear that it was made of LEGOs. A little digging turned up this video. Very cool. 

One of the more clever parts was the design of the 11:1 gear reduction. He needed this because of the output speed of the LEGO motor.

I hate to think how much money he spent on this, but I suppose it's like any hobby. If he spent a thousand dollars on it, and then spent a thousand hours building it, that's only a dollar an hour, which is pretty cheap entertainment.

I did not find a parts list, though this video only came out last month. Akiyuki has provided parts lists for other projects, so we may see a parts list sometime soon. The motorcycle kit he referenced costs $230, though you can apparently get the same kit from a vendor on Etsy for $100. Don't know how that works. LEGO made too many? China cloned the kit? They fell off the back of a truck? Who knows, certainly not me.

We used to build all kinds of Legos here, but then the kids grew and the bricks got shunted off into storage. Then the Saturn V appeared on Christmas and I've been poking around in Lego land again. I keep threatening to set up our Lego train, once I find it. It's probably at the bottom of the pile.

Antikythera Mechanism made of Lego

Not too long ago Roberta X posted a video of a functional replication of Charles Babbage's computing machine made out of Meccano. Poking around on the web this afternoon I came across this video of a functional duplicate of the Antikythera Mechanism made out of Legos.



I put up not one, but two other posts about this device. Turns out that the guy who made the Lego version also made a Lego version of Babbage's machine.

Meanwhile Jo Marchant (who wrote the book Decoding The Heavens) tells us that maybe the design is not Greek, but Babylonian, and may be centuries older than we thought.

Merry Christmas to Me

My kids showed me a little love this Christmas. I just finished assembling the rocket. Nothing like handling the pieces to give you an idea of the proportions. Note the 4th astronaut standing on top of the booster.

They also gave me a bottle of fancy sherry since I was curious about it. It's little stronger than wine which I like. Bourbon is like 45% alcohol. I can't drink it straight so I cut it water which makes it about 20%, which is about what sherry is. Strong enough to feel warm on the way down, but not so strong as to burn you.

My new toys are sitting on top of the 300 pound desk that oldest and I hauled back from Colorado many moons ago. I don't recall how we got it in the basement, but it's been sitting there, unused and unloved ever since. Until now. Now it makes a great workspace for assembling Legos.

Putting this kit together was so much fun I'm thinking about getting another one, maybe the lunar lander. If you ever watch Scott Manley's videos about space exploration, you may have seen a model of a Saturn V in the background. I never suspected it was a Lego model, but now we are brothers of the Lego!

Since I got the Lego version of the Saturn V, I was curious to see what this one is like. First off, it's not a kit, it's fully assembled. It is highly detailed and liable to be fragile. I mean what happens if you drop a Lego model? You have to snap it back together. I think I would a little worried about dropping the Bandai model, especially since I know it costs almost $1,000.

Otona no Chogokin - found on the Big Bad Toy Store page - means Adult Superalloy. 
Chogokin (超合金, Chōgōkin, Sometimes Chougokin or Cho-gokin) is Japanese for "Superalloy" and is a fictitious material which first appeared in Go Nagai's Mazinger Z manga and anime. It was later adopted by Popy in 1972 as the name of a new line of die-cast metal robot and character toys sold in Japan. The first of these toys was the "GA-01" Mazinger Z, which, in spite of questionable engineering that led Popy to offer a free replacement campaign, ignited a craze that changed the face of the Japanese toy industry in the 1970s. Bandai, the parent company of Popy, continues the Chogokin line to this day, branded under their own name.

Juno

In case you missed it, NASA's Juno probe arrived at Jupiter a couple of days ago.

Juno is big, much bigger than the probe we sent to Pluto. With its solar panels extended it is bigger than a basketball court.
Juno weighed 4 tons at launch. Cassini (our probe to Saturn) weighed 6 tons and was the size of a school bus. Saturn is too far from the Sun for solar panels to be of any use, so it used a plutonium power source.

Brains

I am reading Fall by Neal Stephenson. I'm about half way through. It's kind of interesting but not exactly gripping. The story is about a rich guy who dies and has his brain digitized and uploaded into a giant computer system. My first problem with the story is that they start up a simulation process without connecting any input or output devices, so this 'brain' is just running around loose in this virtual space. It eventually starts creating a world from its memories. Now everything in this world needs to be simulated. I suppose this is reasonable, after all your brain creates a complete environment when you are dreaming, and it holds a model of the real world when you are awake. It's reasonable in that if you could create a digital model of a human brain, that digital model should be able to create a digital simulation of the world. But without any communication with the outside world, you would have no idea what is going on in there. In the book, they are relying on traffic analysis to try and paint a picture of what is going on, but it's kind of like trying to follow politics by looking a satellite image of the Earth using Google Maps. (Yes, the Democrats have set fire to California and cut off the power to the Northern half of the state, which must be populated by Republicans.)

Communicating with digitized brain is going to problematic. Shoot, digitizing a brain is going to problematic. I got the impression that the scan in the story makes a map of all the inter-neuron connections (a 'connectome'). This might be a good way to model a brain, IF you had a good model for a neuron. But neurons are complicated. The standard model says that neurons communicate with electrical signals, but recently someone discovered that they also send bits of RNA to other neurons which can then incorporate that into their structure, kind of like adding an app to your smartphone. It can add a new capability, modify an current one or completely change that neuron's personality. So if you really wanted to digitize a brain, you could not get by just by making a connectome, you would have to scan every stinking atom. And that wouldn't be enough either, because the brain you are scanning is dead, so you would need to clean it up, reverse all the decomposition and any damage done by freezing that was done to delay the decomposition, which is going to be very tricky because once complicated molecules break apart, they don't carry any markers that tell you where the pieces came from. Like if you take a giant Lego castle and smash it. Can you tell what the structure was by looking at the pile of pieces?

Communicating with a digitized brain, assuming you can do that, is not going to be easy either. You would have to model the signals that the various sense organs generate, construct analogous devices and wire them into the connectome. Likewise for output, you would need to model the signals coming out of brain and translate those into something could perform an action. Making a manikin walk around might be easier than making it talk.

In the book, the overall approach to this business is to just keep adding more processors and more memory. Since the people who are getting their brains digitized are all billionaires, they can afford lots of processors. There are like 3 million data centers in the US. Whether that would be enough to simulate a digitzed brain is open to debate. Billionaires could be building every larger data centers, kind of like the Pharoahs built pyramids. Not because they are good or useful, but because they can.

Ethernet Color Code

Didn't catch what he was trying to say the first time so I restarted it. There are eight wires in an ethernet cable but only four of them get used and half of those are grounds. I think. In any case I only use four and it seems to work fine. There's probably a good reason for all the extra wires, but I just learned enough to get my computers hooked up and working. The reason I'm posting this is because of this comment from Reman1975:

I worked in IT for over 20 years, and the coolest thing about IT standards for me is how you can buy a motherboard from China, a graphics card that was made in America, Memory sticks that came from a factory in Japan, a CPU that was fabricated in Malaysia, and a SSD that started out in Korean, chuck it all together like Lego bricks, slap some OS install media in it that was based on work by a guy in Finland, and dispite these manufacturers/programmers never being in contact with each other, or even speaking in a common language, folks STILL manage to be surprised if everything doesn't just work straight from the first boot up.

This situations only possible because there's many hundreds of standards that cover every aspect of every single component that goes into a PC. These standards have been refined over decades to get to the point where it's not totally inconceivable that you could talk a non tech savy person through building a PC from a kit of parts OVER THE PHONE, and still have better than even odds of the finished result working as expected.

This remarkable situation is something that's never lost that sense of amazement for me.

The aliens in Disclosure Day were disappointing. Shoot, every science fiction show I have seen that has alien life forms that are roughly humanoid has been disappointing, and they are all like that, aren't they? Which got me thinking - what kind of alien life form might we encounter? So I got to thinking about those fungi the live underground in the forest and cover acres. How about a slimy, jelly like alien that lives in the cracks of rocks and actually has enough strength to push the rocks around. It could do things like reshape a hill or open or close a cavern. It it got tired of its neighbors, it could break free and become a rogue rock monster. Lego a variety of them, and I think Marvel has a character that is made of rocks. You don't always have to use humanoids for aliens.

F-15 Eagle 50th Anniversary

The F-15 was originally built by McDonnell-Douglas, but that company has now been absorbed by Boeing.  1200 of these planes have been built. Top speed is Mach 2.5.

"full-size determinant assembly advanced manufacturing processes"? What the heck is that? Boeing explains:

Determinant assembly is a process that allows for quicker assembly by using features of the parts, such as drilled holes, to quickly align components without the use of additional tooling to aid with alignment. Lego toys or an Erector set are simple examples of determinant assembly.

It's kind of obvious to anyone who has ever built anything. I suspect Boeing is so hide-bound that it required an internal civil war to implement even the most obvious improvements, and since it was such an ordeal to get people to start using it, they had to dress it up with some fancy language.

Chrysler Sebring, Day 24

Started tearing into the motor this evening. Removed the timing chain and the camshafts without too much difficulty. The little bolts holding the cam bearing caps were a bit of a bear to loosen. Twelve point socket wouldn't hold and the only six-point, 10 mm socket I have is quarter-inch drive, so we had to rig up an extension for our mini-breaker bar in order to have enough torque to break them loose. Bigger problem was keeping track of all the bearing caps and cam followers. "Good practice" requires that these pieces be reinstalled in their original places. Fortunately the bearing caps are marked 1I (for Intake) thru 5E (for Exhaust) so we just had to put them in separate, marked boxes for the two the cylinder heads. The cam followers are not very big, and are very dark and oily, so even if they are marked, the marks are going to be difficult to read. I sacrificed one of our Lego storage boxes and just put one follower in each slot, and labeled the lid of the box.

Now we can pull the heads, but boy these bolts are tight. We resort to using the torque wrench to break them loose. We get two loose, and then the wrench starts slipping. Uh, oh, looks like we cracked it. Going to need a new one. That's going to have to be tomorrow, all the stores are closed now.

I am cleaning up and I happen to notice that the idler sprocket is sitting at an angle. What the heck? Is this some kind of special spring loaded bearing that allows it to flop around like this? Umm, no. The bearing is shot. While I am fooling with it a ball falls out and rolls across the floor. This explains the loose ball I found in the timing cover when I pulled it off yesterday. This sprocket also happens to drive the water pump. I am beginning to wonder how much more damage I have yet to discover. On the plus side, the cam bearings all look fine.

You might notice the confused labeling on the plastic box I used for the cam followers. Used to be in the good old days, when all cars had their engines in the front and employed rear wheel drive (the way god intended), that the front, rear, left and right sides of the engine corresponded to the same aspects of the car. Now though, with these cross-wise front wheel drive jobs it's a little hard to tell. Do directions on the engine correspond to the directions on the car, or do they correspond to the functions of the engine? The front of the engine used to have the pulley that drove all the accessories, and the rear of the engine attached to the transmission. If you look at it that way, then the left side of the engine is towards the front of the car, and the right side of the engine is towards the rear of the car. I guess the question is whether you are car centric, or engine centric. Well, bucky, which is it?
